Summary[edit]
DescriptionSandy Lane crosses the railway, Old Milverton - geograph.org.uk - 1538686.jpg |
English: Sandy Lane crosses the railway, Old Milverton And a sandy cat crosses the line in the wake of a train. It is a northbound service from Bournemouth to Manchester Piccadilly and seems to be running a little late. The line was originally a branch of the London & Birmingham Railway between Coventry and New Milverton, midway between Warwick and Leamington. It opened in December 1844 and was soon extended to Leamington and on to Rugby. The Coventry-Leamington section was closed to passenger traffic in 1968 and the Leamington-Rugby branch dismantled. The Coventry-Leamington line reopened to passenger traffic in 1977. It makes journeys possible between the north and the south coast via Birmingham, Oxford and Reading. The line now carries up to 16 Cross-Country trains a day in each direction, together with the Wrexham & Shropshire service from London Marylebone, and freight. There is a stretch of double track through Kenilworth (on the skyline) which must allow trains to pass or overtake. There is talk of dualling the whole line from time to time. |
