In Nederland lijden ongeveer 260.000 mensen aan dementie. Dit aantal zal als gevolg van de vergrijzing en de toegenomen levensverwachting alleen maar toenemen. Van hen heeft zo’n 70 procent de ziekte van Alzheimer. Een ongeneeslijke ziekte, maar voor hoe lang nog?
Begin 2017 stelde Philip Scheltens, hoogleraar neurologie en directeur van het VUmc Alzheimercentrum, nog vóór zijn pensioen – hij is nu 60 – een medicijn voor Alzheimer ontwikkeld te willen hebben. Hoe realistisch is dit doel? En hoe ziet zo’n medicijn eruit? Tijdens het Science Café van dinsdag 16 januari komt hij hierover vertellen. Discussant is Willy Garenfeld,die als ouderenpsychiater bij GGz Breburg veel met dementie te maken heeft. De gespreksleiding is in handen van journalist Ward Deckers. WiWa brengt een toepasselijk openingslied ten gehore. De livestream wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door de faculteiten Medische en Klinische Psychologie én Cognitieve Neuropsychologie van de Tilburg University. |
