The ocean on the northshore of Massachusetts Bay possessesa wider range of expression than on theother side, where it begins to woo thesands of Cape Cod and to yield to themilder moods of the Gulf Stream. Itis a veritable lion here, and the rugged,rock-bound coast seems to be a neces-sary bulwark to stay the fury of theelements. The very temperature ofthe water, and the fresh, bracing vigorof the winds, suggest a strength andmajesty which is sometimes trying tohuman constitutions which lack vital-ity. But though a lion when roused,this northern sea has a nobleness ofdisposition which makes you forget itscruelty on the very morrow after it hasstrewn the beach with salvage, anddashed in gorgeous spray well-nigh upto your chambe
