Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sculpture of St Giles - Parish church Hooke This sculpture of the saint was made by Benjamin Grassby in the 19th century. Grassby was an architectural sculptor and monumental stone mason of Dorchester.

The firm of Grassby, stonemasons of Dorchester, is still going strong today.

St Giles is the patron saint of cripples: a hermit born in Athens in the 8th century he spent much of his life in France where he lived in a forest for some of the time living off the milk of a female deer. Eventually the deer was shot at with an arrow by the king's hunters who wounded the hermit instead. Out of great respect for Giles and his miracles, the king built an abbey when he died, Saint Gilles-du-Gard. His saint's day is 1st September.
