traffic,besides an enormous mosquito fleet,which ply between Seattle and variousother Sound ports. Seattle is the chiefmanufacturing city on Puget Sound, towhich some considerable space is de-voted more particularly elsewhere, andas a shipping point on the PacificCoast it is outclassed only by SanFrancisco, whose only rival it is, espe-cially in the trade with the Asiaticports. The Great Northern Railway,which has done so much for the North-west, has its terminus in Seattle, andhere its cars are unloaded into shipswhich carry the products of the coun-try to the Orient. The construction ofthe Great Northern terminals has butjust been completed, and the monsterdocks, warehouses and wheat elevat-ors and miles of trackage are the firstthings that catch the eye of the travel-er as he enters the city from the north.That company has just now in contem-plation the building of a passengerdepot, freight sheds and trackage facil-ities in the southern part of the city. Theextensive warehouses already complet-ed and used for the storage of incom-ing and outgoing ocean freight, are solarge that entire trains can be unload-ed under their roofs and loaded intothe lines of Oriental steamships, whichleave these docks for Oriental ports.The erection of the great wheat ele-vators means that Seattle will be thegreatest wheat exporting port on thePacific Coast. In addition to the greatelevators of the Great Northern Rail-way in North Seattle, there are exten-sive elevators here owned in West Se-attle, on the western shore of ElliottBay, by the Seattle & San FranciscoRailroad; and from the present out-look the near future will see a numberof others equally as extensive erect-ed.
