Summary
[edit]DescriptionSentinel Steam Bus ELIZABETH at Whitby - geograph.org.uk - 1606249.jpg |
English: Sentinel Steam Bus ELIZABETH at Whitby. Sentinel Waggon Works Ltd was a British company based in Shrewsbury that manufactured steam-powered road vehicles and railway locomotives. They were powered by a high pressure vertical boiler and, unusually for steam locomotives, had a gearbox.
'Sentinels' were manufactured until the 1950s and many survived in use for a long while thereafter - I well remember seeing them around the Liverpool docks and a number of examples have been preserved [1]. 'Elizabeth', shown here, is a 1931 Sentinel DG6P, which translates into "double geared, six wheeler, pneumatic tyres". See also . . . . 1605305 |
