Pyle expressed himself happy to comply with the wishes ofColonel Tarleton, and accordingly, with smiling countenance, Lee and his legiondefiled in front of the tories. On his marchthitherward, many of the borderers who composed the chief bulkof Greenes militia, left and returned to their homes; and when heapproached the vicinage of the British army, his force, though small,consisted almost entirely of regulars. Early in April, Greene arrived at a place called Hobkirks Hill,about a mile from Rawdons encampment at Camden. He establish-ed his head-quarters there, but was soon after attacked* by ^the British commander, and another desperate battle en-sued. For a long time, the result was doubtful. Greene, anticipat-ing victory, sent a detachment to cut off the expected retreat ofRawdon, but a regiment from Maryland becoming confused by afurious charge of the enemy, disconcerted the others, and soonthe rout of the Americans became general. But Greene so farrestored order that he retreated with deliberation, and succeeded
