Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Shropshire Union Canal south of Nantwich, Cheshire. Another dull day on the Shroppie!

The Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal was opened in 1835 at a time when railway development was threatening severe competition to the waterways. Thomas Telford made his canal as straight (therefore short) as the technology of his time allowed, eliminating the need for time consuming lock delays. The price was the need to dig long cuttings and build long embankments through other parts of the canal, though not here in the flat lands of south Cheshire.

In 1845 the companies owning the Chester Canal and the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction canals merged, renaming the whole route between Ellesmere Port and Autherley Junction (near Wolverhampton) as the Shropshire Union Canal (The Shroppie!).
