English: Signs on farm barn. For a view of the barn see > 1582816.
The sign at left mentions Minimal Disease (MD) pigs. This term was introduced in the early days of the development of multi-herd breeding companies. It was ill defined (and often became confused with SPF - Specific Pathogen Free) since the term indicates that the pigs would be free of disease. It was also soon realised that it was impossible to standardise health across all herds and that it is in fact an advantage for a commercial herd to contain non-pathogenic strains of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, for instance, because they provide a level of immunity. |
