Description
  • Scope and content: Original Caption:

"TSC News, April 1973, p. 200"

"Staff member at the Transportation Systems Center of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Cambridge, Massachusetts, simulates a scene where a motorist suspected of drunken driving in administered an on-the-scene test to determine the alcohol level in his blood.

The rugged, portable device could be used by any police officer after a brief instruction period.

It requires the motorist's cooperation in that he must blow into the device. The device chemically analyzes the breath and provides a digital read-out which the officer can observe.

The Transportation Systems Center developed the units for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They are being field-tested.
