Summary[edit]
DescriptionSite of Exchange station, Manchester (geograph 4231538).jpg |
English: Site of Exchange station, Manchester Manchester Exchange station was opened by the London & North Western Railway in 1884 to provide alternative facilities for their trains that had hitherto used the Lancashire & Yorkshire's Victoria station next door. This is the view from the footbridge at the west end of Victoria, and shows just how close the two stations were. After grouping in 1923 brought the stations under common ownership, platform 11 at Victoria was extended west to join platform 3 at Exchange, forming a single, absurdly long platform; the newly tarmacked area (foreground) was part of this. Since closure in 1969, Exchange has been a car park, though for many years the station remained intact and trains continued to pass through on their way to and from Victoria. Exchange was technically in Salford rather than Manchester, though access to the station was via a bridge across the River Irwell from Manchester. |
