Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Site of Speech House Road station
Speech House Road was a large station, given the size of the population it served, with a large signal box, a goods yard, two platforms and a private siding into a wood distillation works (which closed in 1972 but was situated behind the trees in the right background. The signal box was roughly where the patch of grass is between the fence and the green sign, while the station platforms were off shot to the left; the gates which now guard the road crossing mark the line of the track, which also crossed the road here on the level. The line north of this point to Serridge Junction closed in 1959, access to Speech House being retained until 1961 in order to serve the wood distillation works. One final railtour was given permission to use the line to this point in 1964, following which the line back to Coleford Junction near Parkend was lifted. There are some excellent pictures of the station in railway days - including one taken from a similar viewpoint to this shot - in Neil Parkhouse's excellent book "Forest of Dean Lines and the Severn Bridge", volume 2 in the "British Railway History in Colour" series.
