Summary
[edit]DescriptionSite of the Former Strand Gate - geograph.org.uk - 424593.jpg |
English: Site of the Former Strand Gate Rye only has one of its original four town gates remaining, the Landgate. The Baddings Gate was lost in a cliff fall in the 14th century whilst the remaining two, Postern and Strand Gate were demolished in the 18th. The former town wall followed the line now occupied by the white house between the two roads, The MInt (right) and Wish Ward (left) which was once the town ditch. The gate then crossed the current foot of Mermaid Street diagonally to where the Mermaid Corner Tearooms stand. The latter is underneath the Old Borough Arms which still has part of the town walls within the current structure as do most of the houses between The Mint and Wish Ward. |
