HEAD OF AKES LUDOVISI To face p. 197 SCOPAS 197 which so much expression is given by the masters of thefourth century that make copies of their work so ofteninto mere travesties; it is fortunate that we possesssome contemporary originals or replicas by which thecopies can be tested. Other statues might easily be quoted in illustrationof the style of Scopas. Among these is the AresLudovisi, itself a copy of Roman date, and showing inits accessories, especially in the baby Cupid playingbetween the feet of the god, the taste of a later age.But the original almost certainly goes back to the timeof Scopas, and the type of face has much resemblanceto the Meleager. The manner in which the god isseated, with one knee drawn up and his hands claspedabout it, evidently shows the difficult self-restraint of apassionate nature, and is appropriate both to Scopas asa sculptor and to the war-god as a subject. But thedevice is not a new one, and occurs, for example, in theAres of the Parthenon frieze.
