The central caps on both sides andthe inner one on the north side are carved with twisted scrollsissuing from human heads. Besides its anomalous position withregard to the church there are technical indications which suggestthat this doorway has been rebuilt in its present position. Theneckings of the outer caps are now flush with the exteriorsurface of the wall, whereas the probability is that they originallyrested on shafts, while the square abacus was continued along thewall face to support the label and outer order as in other examplesof the same period. It has also been suggested that the opening wassquare-headed, and that the arch-head contained a carved tympanumas at Linton in Eoxburghshire.
