English: VOA’s Vincent Makori reports on lawmakers have elected a former prime minister who is a dual U.S.-Somali citizen. Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, better known as "Farmajo," was declared the winner, after two rounds of voting by the Somali parliament in Mogadishu. Farmajo won the largest share of votes in the second round, far out-distancing the incumbent Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Abdullahi Mohamed was quickly sworn in and is pledging to improve security, fight corruption and help the poor. The 54-year-old Farmajo has spent much of his adult life in the north-eastern U.S. city of Buffalo, New York. He was Somalia’s prime minister for eight months, during 2010 and 2011, at the height of the insurgency by al-Shabaab. |
