Review of Sony A7R Ok, so Ive taken a good 800 or so images with my new Sony A7R, and this is a concise opinion of what I like, and don't like, about this camera. Image Quality So many reviews seem to rate this as less important than other areas of a cameras performance, but its top priority. All things can be forgiven but image quality, thats got to be right. If the camera is not capable of producing acceptable images, then whats the point? So, whats the image quality of the A7R like? In a word - astounding. The image quality is as good, if not better, than my Nikon D800e. The tonal graduation and resolution is exceptional and although the file sizes are 50% smaller than that of the Nikons (how did you do that Sony?) the images are as good. Each RAW is about 30mb in size, but somehow the detail they produce is amazing. Most of the images Ive shot were around ISO 3200 and upwards, and still they are very good in quality. I can't wait to get it in a studio. Handling Ok, this is where the camera is not so great. I find it awkward and difficult to use. Setting everything except shutter speed and aperture is done via a series of menus that when you are close to getting the right shot, is annoying. The menu system is ok, but the buttons to get to it and then navigate are so small, that it causes you to become frustrated at the time it takes to just change the WB. On the Nikon, its 2 seconds, on the Sony, its 10 seconds. When it comes to viewing images, you have to hit the view button and then hit another button to zoom, which zooms you in all the way, you then need to zoom out using a wheel that takes about 20 scrolls to get back to the original size. On Nikon, one button zoom in, one out. Ive got the battery grip on order which will help, but its not as good as Id like. Battery Life Shit. 300 shots per charge, 5 hours to charge. No battery charger, so camera is unusable when charging. Noise High ISO photography is amazing with this camera and surpasses the D800E. Cant say more than that, its brilliant. Lenses Don't buy the FE lenses they are bringing out, buy the A mount Zeiss lenses. They are astonishing and work with an adapter (£300). I used the 85mm f/1.4 ZA lens for this shot above and its a real gem. More to come... |
