w, in command of the Secondand Eighth South Carolina Regiments and Kempers Battery,struck the Federal army at the Henry House just as Kirby Smithappeared on its flank, and so helped to win the day for theConfederate States. In February, 1862, he was promoted brigadier-general to suc-ceed General Bonham, who resigned when elected Governor ofSouth Carolina. In this rank he participated in the Yorktowncampaign, and in McLaws division fought through the SevenDays campaign before Richmond; commanded the troops whichcaptured Maryland Heights, and had a gallant part in the fight-ing at Sharpsburg. At Fredericksburg his brigade was sentinto the fight at Maryes Hill, where Kershaw was in commandafter General Cobb was wounded.
