Description

De oprichting van de Rijkspostspaarbank vond in 1881 plaats. De eerste directeur van de Rijkspostspaarbank was Arnold Kerdijk, een progressieve liberaal die in de algemene spaarbank mogelijkheden zag voor de verheffing van de arbeiders. Het succes van de Rijkspostspaarbank was enorm. Hieraan heeft met name de opvolger van Kerdijk, Armand Sassen, een belangrijke bijdrage geleverd. Kerdijk stapte al een maand na de oprichting op. In de vijftig jaar na de oprichting groeide het aantal spaarrekeningen tot zo’n 2,2 miljoen in 1931. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog bleef de groei van de Rijkspostspaarbank echter achter bij de particuliere spaarbanken. Wettelijk was bijvoorbeeld de rente die de Rijkspostspaarbank kon bieden beperkt, iets wat voor de concurrenten niet gold. De Rijkspostspaarbank moest haar dienstverlening uit gaan breiden wilde ze nog een reden tot bestaan hebben.

De belangrijkste actie was het nauw gaan samenwerken met de Postcheque- en Girodienst. Voor beide diensten bood dit nieuwe mogelijkheden. De samenvoeging van de beide instellingen vond in 1977 plaats: Postgiro/Rijkspostspaarbank. In 1979 volgde nog de invoeging van de Amsterdamse Gemeentegiro, het geheel wordt in 1986 geprivatiseerd tot de Postbank.
