Summary

[edit]
Description Introduced warm-season perennial erect, hairless and tufted grass, usually 40-90 cm tall. Leaves are hairless and tough. Stem bases are slightly to moderately flattened. Flowerheads are dense, narrow, contracted panicles 10-18 cm long; the main axis is only visible in the lowest 30% (if at all) and branches remain pressed against the stem. Spikelets are 1.5-1.8 mm long, 1-flowered and dark coloured. Flowers from summer to autumn. A native of Africa, it is found in disturbed or degraded, compacted areas (e.g. tracks, yards and around sheds). Regarded as an invasive pasture weed, but far less serious than Giant Parramatta Grass. An indicator of compaction. Flowerheads often become heavily infected with ergot (a fungus), making them sooty black. Generally unpalatable and of low nutritional value. Heavy grazing and/or regular slashing slightly improves palatability and feed quality, while limiting seeding. A combination of addressing compaction issues, farm hygiene, registered herbicides, competitive pastures and grazing management are required for control.
