Summary[edit]
DescriptionSporobolus caroli spikelet2 NWS 141 - Flickr - Macleay Grass Man.jpg |
Native warm-season annual or short-lived perennial tufted C4 grass; stems are ascending and 20-60 cm tall. Leaves are hairless or have scattered tubercle-based hairs (i.e. with knob-like bases). Flowerheads are delicate much-branched open panicles to 25 cm long; all branches are widely diverging and the lowest main branches are whorled; becomes straw-coloured and brittle with age, easily breaking off and blown along by wind. Spikelets are stalked, 1-2 mm long, unawned, dark grey-green and 1-flowered. Flowers after rain in warmer months. Found on most land types, preferring wetter areas such as depressions, alluvial flats, drainage lines and streambanks. It is widely scattered, but most common on the Plains and North West Slopes. Native biodiversity. Produces copious amounts of seed and is a useful coloniser of bare or scalded areas. Sometimes it is locally very abundant after good spring or summer rains; it provides nutritious and palatable feed, but produces little bulk. It quickly disintegrates once hayed-off, so provides no carry over feed. Tends to decline with increasing grazing pressure due to its high palatability, but becomes prominent again in overgrazed pastures as bare areas increase. |
