utter this whencaught, and a tame one I kept for some time used tobleat in the same way as it followed me about. Tickell says, the male keeps with the femaleduring the rutting season, about June or July, at othertimes they live solitary ; but I have seen buck anddoe together at any time between October and June. And as I have caught young mouse deer both inNovember and April, I do not think there is a regularbreeding season. Frequently, when felling heavy Ghat jungle, mycoolies have caught mouse deer by surrounding them, and I regret to say they killed many more than theycaught. After capture it is a most difficult matter torear a chevrotain, especially if full grown ; but if hecan be got to survive the first fortnight, he willflourish in captivity, is easily tamed, and makes a verypretty and interesting pet. THE WILD DOG Scientific name.—Cyon dtikhunetisis.(Properly dekkanensis.)Tamil name.—Kaf nai.Kanarese name.—Kad nai.Kurumba name.—Kad^ nai.Nayaka name.—Kad nai. SMALL GAME
Text Appearing After Image:
Dra-iVii hv J■ Macja>ianc The Wild Dog THE WILD DOG The wild dog Doth flesh his tooth in every innocent. As in the case of so many animals in South India, the name applied to this one is a misnomer. He differsfrom all members of the genus Cams in many importantrespects: the dentition is different (four molars in thelower jaw against six in the true dog), the mammaeare more numerous (generally fourteen against ten), andhe has long hair between the pads of his feet; whilehis intractable disposition shows that he has had noshare in the evolution of the domestic dog. The latteris far more nearly allied to the jackal than to the wilddog. This pest, which unfortunately is very numerous inWynaad, is rather a handsome animal. His colour isa bright rufous, lighter on the under parts than theupper, and he carries a thick brush with a black tip, which gives him a jaunty appearance. I must also dohim the justice to say he has a bright, intelligent look, but none the less he has knave writ large
