| Description |
English: St. Andrews House St. Andrews House, viewed from Tolbooth Wynd in the Canongate across a site whose redevelopment was delayed by lack of funding caused by the 'credit crunch'. It was built in 1937 on the site of the Calton Gaol, whose lower walls can still be clearly seen, to house the offices of the Secretary of State for Scotland. Together with New St. Andrews House in James Square, it was the effective seat of government in Scotland prior to the establishment of the devolved Parliament at Holyrood in 1999. |
