Deutsch: Ostsüdostansicht der röm.-kath. Filialkirche in St. Georgen, eine Ortschaft in der steiermärkischen Stadtgemeinde Birkfeld.
Die Kirche wurde zwischen 1210 und 1230 als Eigenkirche in spätromanischem Stil erbaut und war die älteste Pfarrkirche des oberen Feistritztales. Von diesem "Ur-Bau" sind noch das Chorquadrat sowie Teile des westseitig gelegenen Turmes erhalten. Im 14. Jahrhundert wurde die Kirche umgebaut bzw. erweitert. Unter anderem wurde der gotische Chorraum im Osten mit einem 5/8-Schluss errichtet. Im Jahr 1686 wurde der romanische Kirchturm wegen Einsturzgefahr teilweise abgetragen und durch einen barocken ersetzt. 1725/26 erfolgte eine umfassende Vergrößerung, die fast einem Kirchenneubau gleichkam. Wieder wurde die Ausrichtung der Kirche geändert und ein vierjochiges Schiff mit Kreuzgewölbe quer zur bisherigen Anlage errichtet. Der frühere Altar- und der Turmraum erhielten nun die Funktion von Seitenkapellenː [1]. English: East-southeast view of the church in St. Georgen bei Birkfeld. |
