The two boys fellto discussing what would hap-pen to them when Old Hostettersreturned, and whether it wouldbe better to risk Tige then orboth of them later. Finally theydecided to wait. An hour passed,and Tige still retained his atti-tude of vigilant comfort, whilePinkey and Bunny sat in thetree, cramped and helpless, andboiling with rage. There is no telling how longthis situation would have con-tinued, had not a providentialrabbit wandered within range ofTiges vision and tested his con-stancy. The temptation was toomuch for him, and he immedi-ately deserted his uninterestingcharges for the excitement ofthe chase, during which thetwo prisoners half slid, half fellto the ground and made theirescape. It was a dejected, heartbrokenpair that dismounted at the Per-kinsesstable that evening. Whenthey parted, they entered into asolemn compact to have re-venge on Old Hostetters if ittook ten years to get it.

PINKEY AND BUNNY SAW OLD HOSTETTERS LOAD THEIR TWO SACKSOF NUTS ON THE OLD MARES BACK. Helpless in their rage, Pinkey and Bunny sawOld Hostetters exultingly load their two sacksof nuts on the old mares back and lead herlimping and clanking away to the house. Hepaid no attention to them when he left. Ap-parently he had forgotten all about them. Winter and spring came andwent, and with the warm daysof summer the annual epidemicof the swimming-fever brokeout among the boys. No matter what the con-sequence might be, a shrill whistle, accom-panied by the mystic sign of two fingers heldhigh in the air, was sufficient to cause any boywithin hailing-distance to be seized by a vio-lent attack of the disease.
