Description
English: St Agnes' church - west doorway. The west doorway has large depictions of a dragon (at right) - see > 871528 for detail - and a Green Man carved into the spandrels. St Agnes' church > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/871533 is a large building which is probably best viewed from a distance > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/871520. The church was built by the de la Poles during the 15th century. Inside, the nave has a largely unrestored hammerbeam roof retaining traces of its original colour; each post supports a large carved standing angel with outspread wings and more angels line the cornice and the apex > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/871536. The tall C16 rood screen > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/871539 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/871541 - believed to have been painted by at least three different Flemish artists - has 16 panels depicting saints, with four additional panels depicting St Jerome, St Ambrose, St Augustine and St Gregory, forming the screen doors > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/871544 . Above the chancel arch the red background to the former rood can still be seen, the location of the cross outlined in white. In the south transept there is a C15 wall painting of St Agnes > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/871546. Fragments of C15 Norwich School stained glass are set into one of the windows > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/871560. The pulpit is C15 as is the font > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/871562. There are several misericords > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/871557 in the chancel, the benches have poppyheads and some carved figures > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/871549 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/871552 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/871554. The church is open every day. For more information see: http://www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/cawston/cawston.htm
