St Leonard's church in Mundford - Victorian bench end
Description
Mundford Church, Renaissance-style carving (Tudor era) in rood screen of the same church showing a helm topped by an heraldic crest of An elephant statant
Victorian bench end showing an heraldic crest of An elephant statant. Possibly crest of Fountaine family of Narford Hall, Norfolk - which does not seem to have any association with the manor of Mundford. Compare with Renaissance-style carving (Tudor era) in rood screen of the same church showing a helm topped by an heraldic crest of An elephant statant. This was the crest of the family of Knowles/Knolls/Knollys (see Fairburn's Crests, Vol.2, Plate 133, no 9 [1], key to plates, Vol.1, p.120[2]), which had some connection with the manor of Mundford. Francis Blomefield, in An Essay Towards A Topographical History of the County of Norfolk (1805), states: At present there are no shields remaining, but formerly there were: Gul. on a chevron arg. three roses of the first, which is the shield of Sir Robert Knowls, the great warriour in the reign of Edward III. and Richard II.; impaling Sab. a bend ragule arg. between six bezants. Crest, a ram's head arg. armed dexter or, sinister az. Knowls, as before, with a rose or for distinction, on the sinister side of the shield, for John Knowls, rector of Harpley in Norfolk.....(presentations to the rectory: 1396, 8 April, Edmund Berry, presented by Sir Rob. Knollys, and John Drew, rector of Harple. (Francis Blomefield, 'Hundred of Grimeshou: Mundford', in An Essay Towards A Topographical History of the County of Norfolk: Volume 2 (London, 1805), pp. 242-248.
