Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Margaret's Church - view across churchyard gate - geograph.org.uk - 1366649.jpg |
English: St Margaret's Church - view across churchyard gate. St Margaret's church > 1366633 - 1366654 is only a good kilometre distant from the ruined St Mary's church > 1366332 most of the ancient glass of which is now incorporated in St Margaret's east window. The chancel houses a tomb and there is a piscina in the south wall. The octagonal font > 748852 dates from the 15th century and there are a number of old carved bench ends in the nave, all of them were defaced during the Reformation > 1366663. Extensively restored in the late 19th century not much of the original interior has remained. The most noteworthy feature of the church is the tympanum > 1366656. It completely fills the chancel arch above the C14 rood screen, which retains much of its original colour and decoration > 1366660. The tympanum displays the achievements of Queen Elizabeth I, depicting the royal arms with a banner on each side. The arms of Anne Boleyn are depicted below, with the date 1587. At the base the Ten Commandments are listed. The church is open every day. |
