Description
English: St Peter's Church, Matlaske, Norfolk - Hatchment at West end. Text per Farrer, Edmund, Church Heraldry of Norfolk, Vol 2 (1889), p.434[1]:
Heraldry: Azure, a chevron between three horned antelope's heads erased or (Gunton) with inescutcheon of pretence: Per pale argent and vert, three greyhounds courant in pale counterchanged a chief engrailed azure (Tomlinson/Thomlinson of Cley). The oldest holder of these arms appears to be "Thomlinson of Gateshead, County Durham", from 1615 Heraldic Visitation: Per pale wavy argent and vert, three greyhounds (courant ?) (in pale ?) counter-changed a chief invected azure (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.1006
Another hatchment in same church: the same, with crest : An antelope's head erased argent. There are memorials for " Henry Gunton, J'^, died Feb. 4th, 1792, aged 26. Dennis Gunton, died March 12th, 1842, aged 75. Dennis Gunton, Gent., of Cley, died Oct. 11th, 1804, aged 67. Louisa, widow of Dennis Gunton, Esq., died Nov. 26th, 1844, aged 70. Henry Gunton, Gent., 2°** son of Dennis Gunton, died May 9th, 1791, aged 53; Mary his wife, died March 8th, 1831, aged 93. Whitaker Robert Gunton, son of Dennis Gunton, died Jaa^. 30th, 1790, aged 55. Richard Whitaker, Esq., Sheriff of died Dec^ 28th, 1730, aged 43. Dennis Gunton, died August 1st, 1787, aged 82. Richard Whitaker, father of the above-named Richard Whitaker, died July 21st, 1739, aged 77. Rachel Qunton, relict of Dennis Gunton, died Nov. 13th, 1798, aged 85. Frances Mary, widow of Dennis Whitaker Gunton, died Oct. 19th, 1869, aged 65. Henry Gunton, late Captain of the 50"^ Reg*, 3^* son of Dennis Gunton, died at Kishnagur near Paramatta, N.S.W., on July 15th, 1844, aged 56."
