Summary
[edit]DescriptionStacked by the roadside - geograph.org.uk - 1348324.jpg |
English: Stacked by the roadside The trunks of the trees which were felled in this woodland adjoining Woodrising Road have been stacked by the roadside, awaiting transport. Debris from the operation is still littering the road.
The figure written with red paint onto the cut end of each of these log gives their timber volume. See > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1348336 for a closer view. The volume of timber contained in a felled tree is determined by measuring the log's length and diameter with a yardstick. The number of board feet is then written onto the cut end of each log. Logs are commonly cut in even lengths which can measure from 8 to 16 feet long with an extra 4 inch customarily added for the trim. If diameter and length of a log are known a log scale can be consulted which helps to determine the volume. |
