steamand water cylinders to be able to remove piston rods if it shouldbe necessary, without removing the cylinder from its foundations.Enough space must be left between the foundations of adjacentengines and between foundations and engine-room walls to allowa man to get between them to reach the foundation bolts. In aboiler room, there must be a clear space in front of the boilersat least as wide as the boiler tubes are long. The distance betweenthe rear of the boilers and the wall need not be greater than fiveor six feet, or enough to allow a wheelbarrow to be placed oppo-site the soot door in the rear of the boiler setting, if such a door isprovided. Foundations.—The character of the soil underlying the site fora power house should be carefully examined in order that thefoundations can be so planned as to keep the load imposed by thebuildings and machinery within the safe limit. For ordinary one-story buildings where the loads are not excessive, holes should be STEAM POWER PLANTS.
