Description
English: Detail of the top of the stone pagoda on the northwest bank of the Tidal Basin during the Cherry Blossom Festival, March 2012, in Washington, D.C.

The base of a stone pagoda represents earth. The narrow column above the base represents water. The gradually declining stone layers above the narrow column represent fire. The capstone layer represents wind, while the inscribed cylinder represents sky.

This stone pagoda was a gift of the people of Yokohama, Japan, in 1954 as a symbol of the century-long relationship between that city and the people of the United States. On March 31, 1854, the Convention of Kanagawa (日米和親条約) -- also known as the "Japan-U.S. Treaty of Amity and Friendship" and as the Kanagawa Treaty (神奈川条約) -- was signed by Commodore Matthew C. Perry of the U.S. Navy and the Tokugawa shogunate.
