JESUS said, I am the Good Shepherd.You know that a shepherd is a manwho takes care of sheep. Many of the good men that we read ofin the Bible were shepherds. Jacob andhis sons were shepherds. David was ashepherd before he became a king, andmany others that we read of were shep-herds too. In Eastern countries, shepherds are veryfond of their sheep. They lead them intosweet pastures by day, and at night, shouldany wild beast come near the flock, theywill hasten to save the sheep, even at therisk of their own lives. When af lamb is tired or ill, they willnot let it walk, but put it into the folds oftheir loose dress, and carry it in their bo-som. They gently lead their flocks, for itwould not do to drive them fast under theburning sun of those Eastern lands.

THE GOOD SHEPHERD. 117 When a silly sheep or lamb strays awayfrom the fold, how carfully does the shep-herd look over the mountain slopes andbehind the rocks and bushes to find thewanderer. When it is found, how greatly does herejoice over the lost sheep ! The shepherd goes before his sheep, andthey follow him. He does not drive hissheep, as shepherds do in England. Theyknow his voice, and he calls them by theirnames. A few years ago, an English gentlemanwas travelling in Judea, and he was watch-ing one of these shepherds as he tendedhis flock. He saw that the shepherd oftenplucked some grass and called one or otherof the sheep to him. He went up to himand said, The sheep come when you callthem, but I suppose they would come toany one dressed as you are. The shepherdsaid, Will you try, sir? So the gentle-man and the shepherd changed clothes. The gentleman, dressed as the shepherd,plucked a handful of grass, and called asheep, but it would not come; it did notknow the strangers voice.
