Someone has remarked that Japan is not onlythe Grand Park of the World, but also theTreasure House of the East. Nearly all theprincipal temples and shrines in Japan, whichnumber at present no fewer than ten thousand, areto a great extent the common repositories of theart treasures not only of our country, but of othereastern countries as well. They are, as it were,national museums. The need of preserving thesevaluable buildings from any further decay and theirtreasures from iconoclasm and other loss inducedthe Government to get a law passed, in 1897,providing for the appointment of an archaeologicalcommission, now consisting of twenty-five members,in the Department of the Interior, to decide onthe selection of the buildings and art objects tobe put under State protection.
