DescriptionSunken subway car or habitat? (6840151182).jpg |
Try both! In June 2011, from EPA's research ship the OSV Bold, divers from the mid Atlantic region studied an area known as Redbird Reef off the coast of Delaware. There, subway cars have been intentionally sunk, or scuttled, to create artificial reefs as additional habitat for marine life. The dive teams recorded the life that was growing on the cars, as well as fish and other marine life that was nearby. As you can see, the visibility down there isn't easy to work with. EPA Region 3 diver Steven Donohue remarks, "Yes we are the land of green water and are very excited when we can see our own hands and feet, let alone a whole subway car!" In this murky photo, Dennis Orenshaw, Region 3 surveys sunken subway car. Photo by David Byro, EPA. EPA's mid Atlantic region more locally serves Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. www.epa.gov/aboutepa/region3.html Learn more about the scientific capabilities onboard the OSV Bold: www.epa.gov/boldkids/scienceonboard.html |
