the penin-sula; in the southern half of the peninsula zero temperatures usuallyoccur, although there have been some winters in the extreme south-ern counties when there has been an entire absence of zero temperahire; the lowest known temperatures are shown by Fig. 4, whichcovers an observation period of twenty-five years. For the four months, June, July, August and September, thetemperature averages through a great part of tin; Northern Penin-sula slightly above 00°, and as this is the main part of the growing3 18 SURFACE GEOLOGY OP MICHIGAN. season, the conditions are favorable for the growth and maturingof crops of various kinds. There is considerable variation in theclimatic conditions in passing short distances inland from theLake Superior shore, the effect of the evaporation from the lakebeing most marked within a limit of 10 miles or less. Very often the highlands onthe slope toward the lake escape frosts for nearly a month later thanlow lying districts in the interior of the Peninsula, or even thanthe land immediately back of these ranges. The ranges facing uponthe lake will therefore be especially favorable places for the cultiva-tion of orchards and raising of fruits of all classes, as well as for thegrowing of cereals.
