eat range of the Chi)tern hills, whereit has engaged the attention of the learned, and exhaus-ted conjecture respecting its origin. This White LeafCross, in the parish of Monks Risborough, being anantiquity of the same kind with the White Horse, andbeing on a high and steep chalky hill, is widely visible andlittle likely to escape observation and comment, especiallyas it is visible at a greater distance, and is subjected tothe similar process of scouring as the horse, and it isformed upon a large basis with a transverse line of about70 feet in length, and 12 in breadth, aud the trench cutinto the chalk is about 2 or 3 feet deep. It seems a sadfact that scouring was not attended to in earlier dayswith the Giant of Wilmington, which then might, as Dr.Phene has remarked (p. 99, ante), have been preserved andthus rendered permanent. But it will be observed herebyin a note to p. 100, that his Grace the Duke of Devonshirewill do everything in his power for the future protectionof the Giant.
