Summary[edit]

Description

Much lower than the other bridges between Newcastle and Gateshead (until the Gateshead Millennium Bridge at the end of the 20th century), this bridge links the two banks of the River Tyne. The other bridges were built high above the river to allow ships to pass under them. The central section of this bridge rotates to allow ships up and down the river. It was paid for by the great Newcastle industrialist Sir William Armstrong so that large warships could reach his yards further up the river.

It's on the same site as the older Tyne bridges of the 13th and 18th centuries, and is thought to be near the location of the Roman Bridge, the Pons Aelius, built during the reign of Hadrian and named after his family
