ENGLISH CHURCH ARCHITECTURE serpent or reptile, and the face of a girl.( Spinx avis est penna, serpens pede, frontepuella.) The only considerable differencebetween the example at Upavon and that onthe mappa is that in the latter the sphinxseems to have two forelegs, and in the formertwo hind legs. The tail at Upavon is verycurious, just like a fox terriers shortened tail. An illustration of a sphinx is given byMr. E. P. Evans, from a capital in the Abbey ofVezelai. Here a man is riding on a dragon-likebasilisk, and the sphinx (here with four legs) isholding a crystal to beat back the basilisksvenom. Mr. Evans gives as a meaning of thiscarving the idea of spiritual knowledge andstrength overcoming evil.
