ENGLISH CHURCH ARCHITECTURE is late. It was originally over a bedroomfireplace, which is now boarded in. It isinteresting and unusual owing to the numberof birds and beasts represented in plaster inthe foreground and background. Extraordinary representations of theTemptation occur at Vowchurch, Hereford-shire, and Llangattock, near Monmouth.At Vowchurch Adam and Eve are on theuprights of the seventeenth century screen ;fruits like pears are suspended above theirheads, and conventional dragons have beencarved on the beam which runs across. The writer considers the Llangattock exam-ple at least doubtful. The slab on which it iscarved is probably of eighteenth centuryworkmanship. Two demi-figures, one male andone female, are put one on each side of a much-conventionalised tree, which contains in itsupper branches a sort of star within the cir-cumference of a circle. Adam seems to havea fruit in his right hand. Two curious littlelion-like beasts are carved issuing from thetree. Closely co
