Tirie upper pairs of contact pointswere placed 1/2 in. below the top of the beam and the lowerpairs 10 in. below the top, at the plane of the reinforcement.On the one yoke the center of the upper roller and dial wasplaced 5 1/2 in. above the upper contact point and the lowerones 5 1/4 in. below the lower contact point, thus, making thedistance, center to center of dials, 20 1/4 in. The rollers v/ere0.5 in. in circiimference and the dials were so graduated thatreadings were obtained to 0.0001 in. The other yoke had a fixedpin In the place of the roller and dial. On thi» pin rested anotched end of a l/4-in. round, hollow, brass rod. The otherend of the rod, which was a flat piece of steel abouit 1/2 in.wide, rested upon the roller. The rods, remaining a constant,length during the test, recorded by means of the movement of theroller and pointer any change of the length between the yokes. The arrangement of the beam and apparatus is shown in Figure 4. 2/.
