SAMUEL DORAN. such a variety of papers that almost any effect may besecured, and he who confines himself to the use of but onekind of paper does not get the best from his negatives, anddoes not have that variety in his collection that would make itinteresting. The class of negative that will be most satisfactory in theprinting room will be one that has been focused carefully,preferably with the sharp focus in the foreground or middleof the view so that the background may not be obtrusive, anda medium sized stop used in the lens that the negative may 304

ROSES. MARGARET L. BODINE. have some atmosphere. Care should be used in developingin order to get all the half tones possible as well as somedetail in the shadows, and to avoid violent contrasts. We should, therefore, have a negative inclined to softnesswithout strong contrasts and having plenty of detail that willgive a fine print by direct printing on the different kinds ofpaper. If it is desired different effects may be produced bymanipulation. Contrasts may be increased or diminished byselecting from the different grades of developing papers, andif detail is to be subdued a rough surfaced paper may be usedand a broad effect secured. Those who desire impressionisticeffects can print through bolting cloth, or thin sheets of 305 celluloid, and if a more subdued effect is desired prints maybe made from the glass side of the negative. Negatives of the class described are necessary for the pro-duction of the finest platinum prints as well as for the carbonprocess and first class enlarge
