GENERAL VIEW OF THE MIL'WAUKEE FLOWER SHOW. benefits to be derived from such mem- bership. This work should be carried forward with special effort during the period in which the chrysanthemum exhibitions are being held eacli year. I think too tliat further effort should be made toward securing the afHlia- tion of local horticultural societies. I fully realize- that whatever lines ■ if work the society may undertake in order to increase its usefulness, ad- ditional burdens of time and money must be shouldered by some if not all the members and the objection will undoubtedly be raised that the men who are capable of carrying on any additional work, are already doing all that they can spare the time for doing. There is, of course, some grounds for this objection, but this may be overcome bv the appointment if committees for special work, the changing of the by-laws to permit the 'lection or appointment of additional officers, and the hearty co-operation of all the members. AH matter is progressing, and as an organization we must grow and progress, and the isreatest factor in our growth must be the spirit of our members. If we can continue to increase our membership, even though slowly, with energetic, enthusiastic members, there will be no question of the increasing usefulness of our society. In conclusion I will call the attention of those who may have the appointment of men for any of the work of the society to the ad- vice given the public by Elbert Hub- bard, viz: "If you want anything done, get a busv man to do it: the other kind haven't time." Oldtown, Mass.—Edward A. Whit- ney has been appointed superintend- ent of the South Attleboro cemetery, to succeed Prank E. Shaw, who re- signed. American institute of New York Show. This was the seventy-eighth annual fair and exhibition held under the auspices of the American Institute and it is but reasonable to state that none have been more successful. The qual- ity of chrysanthemums exhibited was very fine and the interest shown, both by exhibitors and the general public should be very gratifying to the pro- motors and managers of the exhibi- tion. The only drawback was that there was enough good stock to ac- ceptably cover twice the floor space available at the institute rooms. There were so many good exhibits that it would seem like partiality to particu- larize. A few may be mentioned, how- ever, that were particularly note- worthy. Wm. Duckham, gardener to Mrs. D. Willis James, Madison, N. J., exhibited one of his new productions, Onunda. that for size was a wonder to many visitors. The twenty-five blooms of Merza. which took first prize, exhibited by Thos. Proctor, gardener to R. W. Patterson, Lenox, Mass., were productions worthy of a place in any exhibition. Other ex- hibits of Japanese incurved varieties, very noteworthy prize winners, were staged by Wm. Turner, gardener to M. C. D. Borden, Rumsen, N. J., Geo. H. Hale, gardener to E. D. Adams, Rumsen, N. J., and Thos. W. Head, gardener to Morton F. Plant, Groton, Conn. Though the season is well ad- vanced, fine exhibits of hardy chrys- anthemums were staged by R. Vin- cent, Jr. & Sons, White Marsh, Md. and Thos. Meehan & Son, Germantown. Pa. The judges were Wm. Nicholson, Framingham, Mass.; A. B. Cartledge, Philadelphia; Wm. Wells. Merstham. Surrey, Eng.; Peter Duff. Orange, N. J., Eugene Dailledouze. Brooklyn, N. Y.; Alex McKenzie, Glen Cove, N. T. The awards follow: Chrysanthemums. Twenty-five blnoms, one variety, long stems.—R. W.
