Fi,e;-ure 4 shows in agross way the ajjpearance of a normal indi-vidual in the retroperitoneal position. Notethat the intestines and all structures withmesenteric attachment have fallen forwardand that the prevertel)ral space is clear and J. M., white, male, age thirty-two, pre-sents on examination a large tumor mass onthe left upper abdomen; not painful andmoving only slightly, if at all, with respira-tion. On inflation the mass was seen to haveno connection with the anterior abdominalwall, although it did protrude well forward
