If all manipulation of theneedle within the abdomen or in the abdom-inal wall is carried out only when thestylet is in place in the needle, there willbe little danger from puncturing a vessel.We have repeatedly attempted to inserta lumbar puncture needle in the veins ofthe forearm when the stylet was inplace, and have been unable to do soexcept with great difficulty. If the ob- firmly in the right hand, the heel of theneedle resting against the palm, the pointbeing guarded about i inch from theend by the extended index finger. Thepoint of the needle, guided by the posterioraspect of the left thumb is inserted into thesubcutaneous tissues of the abdomen.In traversing the remainder of the abdom-inal wall, the needle is held almostperpendicular, directed slightly upward
