he had constructed an enginein 1801 that gave fairly good results for manu-facturing purposes, he was called on the nextyear to construct an engine of g inchescylinder by 36 inches stroke, for a boat of 80feet long and 18 feet beam, built in Kentuckyfor Capt. James McKeever, U. S. N., and Louis■Valcourt, and floated to New Orleans, La. Be-fore the vessel was completed the river hadfallen so much as to leave the vessel high anddry on shore. The engine and boiler weretaken out and placed in a saw-mill, where theywere in use until the mill was destroyed by fire.It would seem as though Oliver Evans by thisunfortunate accident was robbed of the creditof having the first successful steamboat in op-eration nearly five years before the Clermontwas placed on the Hudson River. In 1804 heconstructed for the city of Philadelphia a ma-chine for dredging the slips of the city. Themachinery was fitted in place on a large scow,30 feet long by 12 feet beam, and was driven by TYPES or MARINE ENGINES.
