CINCINNATI The trade and manufacturing interests of thecity are enormous, even beyond the proportion ofits size. It has 13 national banks, clearings ag-gregated $1,154,647,600 for 1903. It has also anumber of State and private banks. The build-ing and loan associations, which had grown tonumber 309 in 1902, are being largely absorbedby new and strong trust companies and savingsbanks. The slaughtering and packing of meats,especially pork, has long been and is still one ofthe leading branches of commerce, the citypacking more than half the meat product of theState. Cincinnati holds the first position in thiscountry in sales of pig-iron, the total yearly re-ceipts and sales for direct shipment amountingannually to nearly $50,000,000. The number ofindustrial establishments is about 8,000, employ-ing a capital of about $135,000,000, and 110,000workmen, and occupying real estate valued at$65,000,000, with an annual product of$315,000,000.
