Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Amphitheatre buried under limestone chippings. Chester's amphitheatre was partially excavated in the early 1960s and the exposed remains consolidated into an interesting tourist attraction. In 1992 it looked like this 985. In more recent years a program of excavations were carried out on the 'grey' section seen in the photo, which yielded significant information and finds. In 2007 it looked like this 497146. In 2008 it was decided by 'the powers that be' that the remains had to be protected so the more recent excavations were buried under tons of sand, which were spread by a mechanical digger and a JCB 715849. The sand was then topped with limestone chippings so that today it looks like the photo above. Some people may think that the limestone is grossly out of place in a historic area where sandstone and red brick are the norm.
