HAWAII Tlie near area to tlie crater of Kilauea is iiicriistedwith overlapping flows (jf irregular scales of granularlava of enormous ))roportion, which sound threateninglyinsecure and hollow underfoot and cut like emery. Daylight makes all volcanic elements and surround-ings look black, brown, greenish-yellow and white. Deso-lation and threats to explode and destroy without a mo-ments warning, fill the air, to the uninitiated and sensi-tive, and create every conceivable thought and sensation tothe new visitor, especially that of a desire to be there andawav at the same time. Most visitors seem to be irresist-ibly impelled to resort to poetic exaltations after they haveleft the danger zone and reached the Great Hook at the\ olcano House, which cverv visitor inscribes. 70 Tllli ARCHITECT ASD ESGINEEK CRATER OF VOLCANO KILAUEA, HAWAII After daylight has expended its spell over the scenethrongh illuminating everything from without, includingthe great territory beyond, it fades magically into mysticaltwilight:—then Pele, the goddess of fire, indiscerniblyilluminates this remnant of the worlds original nebula,transforming the daylight blacks, grays, yellows, greensand whites into iridescent burnished gold masses edgedwitli shores of incandescent fire.
