n over herhead ; and her countenance, in depicting which her fond father has put forthall his skill, is one of the most beautiful that death ever dimmed and that thepencil ever rescued from the grave. As this fair maiden figures in the greatToledan Altar-piece ( The Parting of our Lords Raiment), painted between1577 and 1587, it is probable that her portrait was executed not long after thelatter year.—Sir William Stirling-Maxwell : Annah of the Artists of Spain,1891, vol. i. pp. 338-9. Canvas. 24J in. x 19I in. (0.622 x 0.495). Formerly in the Collection of King Louis Philippe, at the sale of whosepictures, May 6, 1853, No. 82, it was acquired by the father of the presentowner. In the sale catalogue its provenance was described as De Serafino aMadrid. This picture was No. ^59 in the 1838 catalogue of the Louvre. Other portraits of the lady exist.
